Effect of the ketamine/xylazine anesthetic on the auditory brainstem response of adult gerbils BJMBR
Lima,J.P.; Ariga,S.; Velasco,I.; Schochat,E..
The auditory brainstem response (ABR) is a test widely used to assess the integrity of the brain stem. Although it is considered to be an auditory-evoked potential that is influenced by the physical characteristics of the stimulus, such as rate, polarity and type of stimulus, it may also be influenced by the change in several parameters. The use of anesthetics may adversely influence the value of the ABR wave latency. One of the anesthetics used for e ABR assessment, especially in animal research, is the ketamine/xylazine combination. Our objective was to determine the influence of the ketamine/xylazine anesthetic on the ABR latency values in adult gerbils. The ABRs of 12 adult gerbils injected with the anesthetic were collected on three consecutive days,...

Effects of different general anesthetics on serum hemolysis and hepatic and muscular glycogenolysis in rats BJMBR
Machado,E.F.A.; Normand,A.C.R.; Nunes,L.A.S.; Brenzikofer,R.; Macedo,D.V..
Anesthetics can affect the structure and biological function of tissues and systems differentially. The aim of the present study was to compare three injectable anesthetics generally used in experiments with animals in terms of the degree of hemolysis and glycogenolysis occurring after profound anesthesia. Twenty-four male Wistar rats (330-440 g) were divided into three groups (N = 8): chloral hydrate (CH), ketamine + xylazine (KX), Zoletil 50® (zolazepam and tiletamine) + xylazine (ZTX). After deep anesthesia, total blood was collected. The liver and white (WG) and red gastrocnemius (RG) muscles were also immediately removed. The degree of serum hemolysis was quantified on the basis of hemoglobin concentration (g/L). Hepatic and muscular glycogen...

Effects of omega-3 supplementation on interleukin and neurotrophin levels in an animal model of schizophrenia Anais da ABC (AABC)
ZUGNO,ALEXANDRA I.; CANEVER,LARA; MASTELLA,GUSTAVO; HEYLMANN,ALEXANDRA S.; OLIVEIRA,MARIANA B.; STECKERT,AMANDA V.; CASTRO,ADALBERTO A.; PIZZOL,FELIPE DAL; QUEVEDO,JOÃO; GAMA,CLARISSA S..
ABSTRACTNew studies suggest that polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as omega-3, may reduce the symptoms of schizophrenia. The present study evaluated the preventive effect of omega-3 on interleukines (IL) and neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in the brains of young rats subjected to a model of schizophrenia. Treatment was performed over 21 days, starting on the 30th day of rat's life. After 14 days of treatment with omega-3 or vehicle, a concomitant treatment with saline or ketamine (25 mg/kg) was started and maintained until the last day of the experiment. BDNF levels in the rat's prefrontal cortex were decreased at 1 h and 24 h after the last administration of ketamine, whereas the group administered with ketamine and omega-3...

Hematological and biochemical parameters in Spotted Paca (Cuniculus paca) undergoing pharmacological restraint and general anesthesia Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Uscategui,R.A.R.; Santos,V.J.C.; Almeida,V.T.; Barros,F.F.P.C.; Kawanami,A.E.; Cruz,N.R.N.; Feliciano,M.A.R.; Vicente,W.R.R..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to assess the effects of chemical restraint, general anesthesia and opioid treatment on hematological components in Cuniculus paca. Eight healthy, adult, captivity female animals , underwent three laparoscopic procedures with a 15-day interval were evaluated. After physical restraint, an association of ketamine (25mg/kg) and midazolam (0.5mg/kg) was administered intramuscularly for chemical restraint. Posteriorly, anesthesia was induced and maintained with isoflurane; and randomly administered methadone (0.5mg/kg), tramadol (5mg/kg) or saline-placebo (0,1mL/kg) intramuscularly. After pharmacological restraint and in the final laparoscopy stage, venous blood samples were obtained for complete blood count, total plasma...

Respiratory mechanics and morphometric changes during anesthesia with ketamine in normal rats BJMBR
Alves-Neto,O.; Tavares,P.; Rocco,P.R.M.; Zin,W.A..
Ketamine is believed to reduce airway and pulmonary tissue resistance. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of ketamine on the resistive, elastic and viscoelastic/inhomogeneous mechanical properties of the respiratory system, lungs and chest wall, and to relate the mechanical data to findings from histological lung analysis in normal animals. Fifteen adult male Wistar rats were assigned randomly to two groups: control (N = 7) and ketamine (N = 8). All animals were sedated (diazepam, 5 mg, ip) and anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium (20 mg/kg, ip) or ketamine (30 mg/kg, ip). The rats were paralyzed and ventilated mechanically. Ketamine increased lung viscoelastic/inhomogeneous pressure (26%) compared to the control group. Dynamic and...

Romifidine or xylazine combined with ketamine in dogs premedicated with methotrimeprazine Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
LUNA,Stelio Pacca Loureiro; NOGUEIRA,Constanza Sevá; CRUZ,Mariângela Lozano; MASSONE,Flavio; CASTRO,Gladys Bastos.
The cardiorespiratory and analgesic effects of romifidine or xylazine combined with ketamine was investigated in dogs. Dogs were premedicated with 1.0 mg/kg of methotrimeprazine IV, followed by 0.1 mg/kg of romifidine (n = 8) or 1.0 mg/kg of xylazine (n = 8) and 15 mg/kg of ketamine IM, using a double blind randomised design. Dogs of both groups developed hypothermia, bradycardia, slight hypotension and reduction in respiratory rate and minute volume. There were minimal changes in end tidal CO2 and O2 saturation. There were no differences either in time or between the groups in pH, PaO2, and blood biochemistry. The reflexes to pain were reduced until 30-45 minutes of anaesthesia in both groups. Twelve bitches were divided in two groups as above and...

The preventive effects of ascorbic acid supplementation on locomotor and acetylcholinesterase activity in an animal model of schizophrenia induced by ketamine Anais da ABC (AABC)
DAMAZIO,LOUYSE S.; SILVEIRA,FLÁVIA R.; CANEVER,LARA; CASTRO,ADALBERTO A. DE; ESTRELA,JADNE M.; BUDNI,JOSIANE; ZUGNO,ALEXANDRA I..
ABSTRACT Studies have shown that schizophrenic patients seem to have nutritional deficiencies. Ascorbic acid (AA) has an important antioxidant effect and neuromodulatory properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of AA on locomotor activity and the acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) in an animal model of schizophrenia (SZ). Rats were supplemented with AA (0.1, 1, or 10 mg/kg), or water for 14 days (gavage). Between the 9th and 15th days, the animals received Ketamine (Ket) (25 mg/kg) or saline (i.p). After the last administration (30 min) rats were subjected to the behavioral test. Brain structures were dissected for biochemical analysis. There was a significant increase in the locomotor activity in Ket treated. AA prevented the...
